Leeds West Indian Carnival returns for another year. 54 years and still going strong. After a successful 2020 Virtual Carnival last year, we’re excited to be returning with some of your favourite events, another virtual carnival and new ones. Even though we are not on the road we are committed to protecting, preserving and promoting our African Caribbean Cultural heritage.
The celebrations include the events below, please see details of each event with dates and times:
Emancipation Service
Date: Sunday 1st August
Location: Roscoe Church 132 Chapeltown Rd, Leeds LS7 4EE

We acknowledge and commemorate the anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved people in the British Caribbean on 1 August 1834. We will reflect on the words and the spirit of those who have passed on and encouraged us to remain resilient, strong and mindful. As Marcus Garvey Said “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” We also remember those who made Leeds West Indian Carnival the success it is today.
Carnival Chronicles

Carnival Home is opening its doors to the children from the community with the aim to engage the next generation of carnival storytellers, artists, musicians, enthusiasts and designers.
This event will deliver an activity day for children between the ages of 5 – 14 through a series of short taster workshops where children from the community will be able to engage with their carnival creativity and the heritage of carnival through pan, storytelling, costume design and music (soca and calypso).
This event is funded by Awards for All, The National Lottery Community Fund
Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Access to the event will only be at the time specified on the ticket. All tickets must be presented on entry (digitally or in hard copy) to gain access to the event. (Relevant covid19 safety restrictions will apply).
Young Masqueraders Summer Workshops

Join us this summer as we continue keep the Carnival spirit alive by the inviting the next generation of Carnival artists to come and learn all about the Carnival arts. Children and young people ages 4-16. Come and learn all about the 3 Carnival artforms – music, costume-making and dance.
- Learn skills in costume designing to create your own Carnival costumes.
- Learn the latest carnival dance moves and the importance of dance in ‘playing mas’.
- Learn to write your own soca tunes and all about steel pan.
- Prepare for participating in the Prince and Princess Show 2021.
LWIC will ensure a strict protocol in line with Government policy for Covid-19 and PPE. We encourage children to be tested at home with a lateral flow test However, these tests are not compulsory. Free Lateral Flow tests can be collected from your local Chemist. We will also have some onsite if needed.

The Legacy Prince and Princess Show

As the carnival season is approaching, we as a carnival committee do not want the young people to miss out because of the pandemic.
‘So this year, to ensure your safety, we are hosting a Prince and Princess show at the Leeds Playhouse’.
Let our Carnival pioneers show the young people the way and let the carnival legacy live on, in the 54th, Leeds West Indian Carnival Prince and Princess Legacy showcase and crown the 2021, Winning Prince and Princess. The show will also feature local acts.

The Legacy King and Queen Show will be a night of hype and energy with flamboyant costume designs. It will be a display of costumes from past and present. There will be a comedian lined up. singers, a Soca Monarch showcase and much more.

Leeds Virtual Carnival 2021

THE 54th Leeds West Indian Carnival is all about legacy and will be streaming live to the world. We will have a special headline act. Look out for this announcement. There will be Guest Appearances by line up of Carnival talents; Leeds, national and international DJs; Interactive Activities & Performances; Parade of the Troupes; Carnival Cultural History; Competitions, Giveaways & more!
